The future of my writing: Where do I go from here?

Hello! Dominique Gibson is back with another post. After taking a three month hiatus from writing these posts and my newsletters, I decided that I really miss writing and want to go back to doing it again. There has been so much that has been going on in my life lately including adjusting to my new home in another country, having to make different plans when it comes to switching jobs (I am still in teaching but realized that the job I currently have now is not the right fit for me), and having the time to finish a written project I started a year ago that I still want to finish today. My hope is that I will be able to finish it before the new year starts. In the meantime, I still want to be in the process of rewriting the first two projects I started earlier in the year (Or was it last year?).

Harlequin Home

This year has been a year of disappointments when it came to my side of writing for Harlequin. As much as I wanted to finish the category romance course I paid for, I couldn’t do it. I was so mad at myself for this because I became so strong in the beginning only for me to fail towards the end of it because of the new transition that took place once I started my new job in South Korea. As much as I love category romances, I just don’t see myself writing a category romance unless they bring back something that is similar to Harlequin Nocturne where they had a line pacifically for paranormal romances. I would love for them to even bring back the Harlequin LUNA line, which if I am not mistaken, was a line that was for fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi romance for single title books (Nocturne was for category romance books only).

I have tried many times to write contemporary romances over the years but I will admit that it doesn’t hold my attention as much as writing paranormal romance novels. In a few days, I will be stepping into another area of the genre world that I thought I would never step into but I am finding myself becoming more fascinated by it day by day. The genre? ROMANTASY. Yes, you read that right. Even though I have read Fourth Wing and enjoyed it a lot, I never thought in a million years I would be writing something that might be similar to it. However, this has given me inspiration that could fall in line with my current book series in the near future.

In four days, I will be taking yet another writing course (Which they said I can watch and take anytime I want as long as I complete the full price for the course) sponsored by AutoCrit called ‘Enchant and Entangle: A Six Week Romantasy Masterclass’ where for six weeks, three bestselling authors will provide all sorts of tips, tricks, and guidelines to write a bestselling romantasy novel that captures readers’ attention. Unlike Harlequin category romances where they mainly focus on contemporary romances on ordinary people going through regular problems in the modern world, this class will focus on romance and fantasy blended in to create a story that the readers will want to read.

So, how will this class help me when it comes to the Truson S.E.T. series? Well, I do have plans in the future to include dragons in my stories (Half-human, half-dragons to be exact) just like I do with regular animals now (orcas, dolphins, sharks, etc.). However, this won’t be just with any dragons, they will have superpowers of their own as well. Some might have powers that have already been done before (based on the research from the internet) while there might be powers that are combined. I don’t know how it will work in the future exactly but I am pretty sure that people might really take an interest in this in the future.

I did have a lot more to say when it came to this post but I don’t want to make it too long so I decided that I will just end it here and come back next week with a new post. Happy Reading! See you soon.

My first love has always been writing since I was eight years old. After getting my Bachelor's Degree in Fiction Writing from Columbia College Chicago and struggling for years trying to get published the traditional way, I decided that the only way to promote my work was to promote myself which is why I am self-publishing my paranormal romance The Truson S.E.T. Series.
