Hello! Dominique Gibson is back with another post. So, I recently did a video on TikTok on my frustration about writing short stories and novellas but I thought I would do it here as well. I recently just started reviewing the first book in the Truson Holiday Series (A spin off from the regular Truson S. E. T. series with a holiday edition) called The Reinmans: The Female Bodyguard. The verdict? It was the absolute worst piece of writing I had ever encountered.
I had pretty much the same experience when it came to soon-to-be fourth book in the original Truson S.E.T., Courtney’s Redemption (the book above this post). Whenever I tried to make it into a shorter book instead of one of the longer books that I usually write, it comes out totally different to where I am ready to throw the book out the window. The writing itself feels rushed, the characters are not fully fleshed out, the overall plot is messy and unfocused…
I could go on but I think you get the point by now.
Since I have tried to successfully write short stories or novellas without leaving the readers feeling confused or even downright angry about what is going on on the page, I feel as if this writing path is not for me. I am sure that there are plenty of people who love this style of writing and could probably make a living off of it now that indie publishing has become a new path for writers to explore, giving them the opportunity to share their stories with the world without having literary agents or publishers telling them otherwise.
For me? I am going to stick with what I know and just leave it at that. I love writing novels. Writing novels is who I am and I refuse to change it now to follow what other people say about how beneficial it would be to write a short story or novella for your ‘writing portfolio’. I am refusing to listen to this advice because it doesn’t work for my situation. But what doesn’t work for my situation doesn’t mean it won’t work for the other authors out there who want to try something new and different.
Long story short: I am sticking to writing novels and nothing else.
